An Evening with…Afghanistan

WHAT is happening in Afghanistan?!

Come listen to the people who have been there

and who can tell us first hand what is going on.

It is with great pleasure that the
SAN DIEGO WORLD AFFAIRS COUNCIL
and
Citizen Diplomacy Council of San Diego
collaborate to bring this important information about Afghanistan to our San Diego internationally minded citizens.

EXPERTS
Tony Perry has been the San Diego bureau chief for The Los Angeles Times since 1987. Notable recent assignments include New York after 9/11, Afghanistan with the U.S. Marines in 2001, the Persian Gulf in 2002, and Iraq with the U.S. Marines every year since 2003 . He was honored by the San Diego Press Club in 2001 for his Outstanding Contribution to Journalism.

Bonita Chamberlain started a jewelry making project with the villagers in the eastern province of Nuristan, Afghanistan. She taught them how to recover and mine gems uncovered by Soviet bombs during the war. Over $580,000 has been sent back to be used for schools, teacher training, healthcare, an orphanage and to clear landmines. Bonita will speak about her work and the current fatwa the Taliban has placed on her. The sterling silver and gemstone jewelry will be on sale at this event.

Stephen R. Brown has made seven trips to Afghanistan since 9-11 and will go again in October.
