Congressman Bob Filner represents California’s 51st Congressional District, one of the most ethnically diverse districts in the nation. He taught history at San Diego State University for more than twenty years and was the President of the San Diego Board of Education. He was first elected to Congress in 1992, and has been re-elected by wide margins every two years. In January 2007, Congressman Filner became Chairman of the House of Representatives Veterans’ Affairs Committee.

Mr. Blake was appointed Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs in May 2009. As Assistant Secretary, he oversees U.S. foreign policy with India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives, Bhutan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, and Tajikistan. He previously served as Ambassador to Sri Lanka and Maldives from 2006 to mid-2009 and Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Mission in New Delhi, India from 2003 – 2006. Since he entered the Foreign Service in 1985, he has served at the American Embassies in Tunisia, Algeria, Nigeria and Egypt. He has also held a number of positions at the State Department in Washington, including Senior Desk Officer for Turkey; Deputy Executive Secretary; and Executive Assistant to the Under Secretary for Political Affairs.

Liesl Gerntholtz: Putting Domestic Violence on the International Agenda

Liesl is the Director of Women's Rights Division for Human Rights Watch. She previously served as the Executive Director of the Tshwaranang Legal Advocacy Centre to End Violence Against Women in Johannesburg. In addition to providing regular briefings to the South African parliament she was involved in high impact strategic litigation – including a successful case to help change the definition of rape in South Africa. Prior to this, she was manager of the legal unit of the AIDS Law Project of South Africa.

Dr. Latha Varadarajan: International Criminal Tribunals and Justice from a Historical Perspective

Dr. Varadarajan joined the SDSU faculty after receiving a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Minnesota in January 2005. Her research is located at the intersection of international relations theory, international political economy, international security and South Asian Politics. Some of her research questions include: the politics of transnationalism (specifically state-diaspora relations); the connections between neoliberal economic restructuring and national security policies; the meaning and relevance of postcolonial struggles; and the debates surrounding the contemporary manifestations of imperialism.

 



Dr. John Stoessinger: Overcoming Extreme Adversity

Dr. John Stoessinger is an internationally recognized political analyst and a prize-winning author of ten leading books on world politics. He holds a Ph.D. from Harvard and has taught at Harvard M.I.T., Columbia and Princeton. From 1967 to 1974, he served as acting director of the political affairs division at the United Nations. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and lectures extensively throughout the world.
